KeruBo: A Year of Growth and Reflection

2024 has been a year of incredible opportunities, personal growth, and much-needed reflection. While performances and collaborations took center stage, this year also brought moments of deep introspection, especially during my recent trip back to Kenya.

This trip wasn’t just about visiting family; it was about recharging. After months of intense social work, balancing community projects, teaching, and performing, I found myself feeling disconnected from the very creativity that fuels me. I realized that I had been pouring so much into others that I hadn’t taken the time to pour back into myself.

Surprisingly, I felt a sense of guilt when I paused to enjoy the simple pleasures of being home. There were moments when I wondered if I was doing something wrong by stepping back. But through those moments of reflection, I learned something important: rest is not selfish; it’s essential. Creativity thrives when we allow ourselves the space to breathe, to reconnect with what inspires us, and to simply be.

Kenya reminded me of this. The quiet strength of my homeland, the warmth of my family, and the beauty of the land brought me back to myself. I returned with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of how important it is to balance giving with receiving.

This year has been full of unforgettable experiences—performing at the Discover Burlington Jazz Festival, collaborating with Putumayo World Music, and continuing my work as a Teaching Artist with Clemmons Family Farm. But it was in the stillness of this trip that I found the energy and clarity to move forward.

Looking ahead, I am excited to release new songs and expand my creative collaborations with other artists. There is something truly special about connecting with other creatives and weaving together diverse stories and perspectives. These collaborations fuel my vision and remind me why I love what I do.

As I prepare to release new projects, like the video for “You Are Enough”, I’m reminded that creativity is nurtured not just by hard work, but also by rest, reflection, and moments of joy. Thank you for continuing to be a part of this journey with me. Here’s to a future filled with music, connection, and balance.
